As a Utility Arborist Trainee, work is carried out outdoors with trees and around powerlines as part of a supportive team. Training and development are provided at every stage.

This is a career where earning and learning happen together, alongside gaining recognised qualifications and practical industry skills.

What is involved

A fully supported 3-year training pathway is followed, combining on-the-job experience with formal study, including:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture) Level 4
  • New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Utility Arboriculture) Level 3
  • Electricity Supply Introductory Level 2 (block course)

This is physical, hands-on work. Activities include outdoor work, working at heights, and supporting critical electricity infrastructure.

Desired Skills and Experience

What is required

Experience is not required. The right attitude is essential.

  • A genuine interest in becoming a qualified tradesperson with a focus on a long-term career within the Electricity Distribution Industry
  • Reliable, honest, and team-focused approach
  • Great communication skills
  • Passion, Motivation and willingness to learn
  • A high level of physical fitness and enjoyment of outdoor work
  • Comfort working at heights (support provided)
  • NCEA Level 2 or equivalent experience
  • Full, clean Class 1 driver’s licence
